Nov. 14th, 2008 - Detect a Stroke (click to read)
Written by L. Marks

Three hours is all you have. Within three hours of a stroke doctors can administer a clot-busting drug, which can potentially minimize the damage caused by stroke.

Below are the five warning signs and an acronym for detecting a stroke. Visit the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s website site for more information and important downloads.

Five Warning Signs of Stroke:

  • Weakness - Sudden loss of strength or sudden numbness in the face, arm or leg, even if temporary.
  • Trouble speaking - Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding or sudden confusion, even if temporary.
  • Vision problems - Sudden trouble with vision, even if temporary.
  • Headache - Sudden severe and unusual headache.
  • Dizziness - Sudden loss of balance, especially with any of the above signs.

Acronym for Detecting a Stroke (FAST):

Face – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
Arms – Ask the person to hold out their arms. Can they hold them level or are they uneven?
Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech slurred? Can they repeat the sentence properly?
Time – A stroke is treatable, so it is essential to get emergency medical care immediately. Call 9-1-1.

Oct 28th, 2008 - Carve a Pumpkin (Click to open / close)
Written by L. Marks

Carving a pumpkin for Halloween is a long-standing tradition. Instead of carving a typical pumpkin face, try using a stencil to create easy-breezy pieces of pumpkin-art! Another great alternative is to shade your pumpkin: instead of carving right through, peel the skin off the pumpkin to allow the candle light to glow through the pumpkin’s flesh.

Follow these easy steps to create your masterpiece!:

  1. Prepare your pumpkin by cutting off the top, scooping out the insides and carving a small ventilation hole for when you put in a candle.

  2. Go to one of the websites listed below and find a pumpkin carving pattern that you like. These patterns show you where to cut or peel in order to make exquisite pumpkins. You can find scary scenes, crazy characters and other unexpected designs, so take the time to explore all the images available!

  3. Some websites have a Print feature that will allow you to print the pattern directly from the website. If this does not work, or is not available, don’t worry! Use these steps to print your pattern:
    1. Download the image to your computer (if you put it on your desktop it will be easier to find).
    2. Open a word processing document and import the stencil (if using Microsoft Word, from the menu bar select Insert -> Picture -> From File, then select the image from your desktop).
    3. Once you have the image in your document, use the icons on the corners of the bounding box around the pattern to resize and make it larger or smaller.
    4. Print the word document.

  4. Tape the pattern to your cleaned out pumpkin.
    1. If you are planning on shading the pumpkin, use a knife to gently trace through the paper and skin of the pumpkin. Use your knife to gently pull back the skin and enough of the flesh to let the light from a candle through.
    2. If you are cutting the image into your pumpkin, cut right through the paper and pumpkin.

  5. Place a small votive or tea light candle inside your pumpkin and display for your family and friends to admire.
